Our Treasures

We have been learning about our identify and what makes us special. We brought along some of our treasures from home to share with the class and we had to explain why they were special to us.

Ella brought along a glass cat that has bee handed down from her grandmother.

Seonyeong brought her special doll that her mother made for her when she was young.

We had fun learning about each other.

What has Jet Star been up to in Room 15?

We have been very lucky to have Jet Star with us in Room 15 over the past four weeks. He has been learning lots and having fun getting to know us all.

Take at look at what he has been up to......

Jet Star has been learning about Tu Tangata and what it means to us.

Tu Tangata means we are strong!

Tu Tangata means we stand tall and reach high in our learning.

Jet Star has been getting to know us and we introduced ourselves to him.

"Ko Angeliya toku ingoa".

We wrote some stories about what Jet Star has been doing with us.

Jet Star learned to draw and he pinches his pencil. Jet Star is clever because he has a good brain. Jet Star is awesome at handwriting because he is a good and neat writer. Jet Star writes all his letters on the line.

I taught Jet Star how to read because he loves books. He is really good at reading now. I taught him the class treaty so his manners are great now. He can be good and not call out now. He sits on the mat. He folds his arms and legs and sits nicely on his bottom.

CLASS TREATY

Jet Star has been learning to follow our Class Treaty. Look at his fantastic mat manners!

Jet Star even came to watch us at swimming time. Look at Sara's straight kicking legs.

Thank you Jet Star for being part of our team. We hope you have enjoyed your stay with us.

Maths rocks!

We are learning about numbers that equal 10 like 1 and 9 and 5 and 5.

To help us learn we looked at the problems in lots of different ways. We drew our examples, wrote word stories, used counters to show it and wrote it with numbers.

Here we are in action!

Helpful Classroom Information

Reading
Your child will bring home a book and/or poem every night. Make sure you read with your child, ask them questions about the book, and ask them what reading strategy they are learning. This will help them to comprehend what they are reading and practice their skills. Please support your child to return their reading book/s daily.

Our library time is WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

Spelling
Your child will have  weekly spelling words in their reading log notebook. These words will come from classroom testing  and/or their draft writing books starting in a couple of weeks. The children will have the opportunity to learn these words within our classroom programme too.

Hukanui School has a No Homework Policy.

Maths
For the first 3 weeks of term our Maths learning focus is Statistics. Maths Interchange will start after that where we will be targeting Addition and Subtraction. During Maths Interchange your child may have another teacher in the Year 1/2 team. This is dependent on what stage they are at.

Writing
We will explore a range of writing through our topic Identity and other learning experiences. The children will have writing goals in the back of their writing books that they will be working on. Feel free to check them out!

Parent Support
If you would be interesting in helping out within the classroom or doing a weekly supporting role such as returning books please come and discuss options with me.

I am really looking forward to working with the new members of Room 15 and I am sure it is going to be an awesome year ahead! Please feel free to ask questions, pop in and meet me. I look forward to meeting you all!

Kind Regards
Justine Brydon
